Rand, Perrin, Mat e Hurin si trovano in trappola circondati da soldati Seanchan da una parte e da Manti Bianca dall'altra. L'unica via di fuga è suonare il Corno di Valere, è Mat a farlo.
I Manti Bianchi di Bornhald vengono spazzate via da una serie di esplosioni.
Tra il caos e la nebbia fitta giungono gli eroi leggendari richiamati dal Corno: Rogosh, Gaidal Cain, Birgitte... e Artur Hawkwing a guidarli nella battaglia contro i Seanchan. All'improvviso Ba'alzamon si presenta davanti a Rand e i due si trovano sospesi sopra la città per lo scontro.

Ba'alzamon lo fissava _Perchè sorridi come un idiota? Non sai che posso distruggerti completamente?
Rand percepiva una calma immensa oltre a quella del vuoto _Io non ti servirò mai, Padre delle Menzogne. In migliaia di vite, non l'ho mai fatto. Lo so. Ne sono sicuro. Vieni. E' giunto il momento di morire.
Ba'alzamon sgranò gli occhi: per un istante furono fornaci che imperlarono di sudore il volto di Rand. L'oscurità alle spalle di Ba'alzamon ribolliva attorno a lui, e il suo viso si indurì _Allora muori, verme!
Colpiì con il bastone, come se fosse una lancia. Rand gridò mentre lo sentiva perforargli il fianco, che bruciava come un attizzatoio incandescente. Il vuoto tremò, ma lui resistè con l'ultima delle sue forze, e affondò la lama con il marchio dell'airone nel cuore di Ba'alzamon. Ba'alzamon gridò, l'oscurità alle sue spalle gridò. Il mondo esplose nel fuoco.
E' lungo, lo so, ma non ho potuto evitare di trascrivervi la parte finale del capitolo perchè è di una bellezza assurda! E poi mi sono trattenuta... avrei voluto iniziare da quando Rand si rende conto di quale sia l'unica soluzione. STUPENDOOOOOOOOOOO

E' vero, un capitolo indimenticabile...la sorpresa di un Mat che suona il Corno, la grandezza di Rand che fa capolino sempre di più!!! Emozionantissimo l'incontro con gli Eroi!

Cito Lord Agelmar: Noi dell Shienar ci consideriamo gente di frontiera, ma meno di cinquant'anni fa lo Shienar non apparteneva realmente alle Marche di Confine. A settentrione rispetto a noi e all'Arafel, c'era il Malkier. Le lance dello Shienar cavalcavano a settentrione, ma a tenere indietro la Macchia era il Malkier.
Da racconti come questi, dall'accoglienza che Lan riceve nello Shienar, da come tutti lo rispettano e lui rispetta loro e la loro missione (che è la sua missione!), ho sempre ritenuto che Lan avesse molto in comune con gli shienaresi, anzi, a volte è più shieranese di altri!!!
