Anche io ho interpretato, come Aegis, la frase su Tomas che spende la sua ultima ora come un custode che ha deciso di non sopravvivere alla sua aes sedai, che e' plausibile specialmente considerando la situazione particolare di rinnegati del lato oscuro.
Per completezza, ho anche guardato sulla Guida quanto si dice a proposito dei Darkfriends e dei giuramenti. A pag. 91 della mia edizione si conferma che esistono livelli differenti di coinvolgimento, ma non ho trovato nulla di conclusivo su livelli differenti di giuramenti , che pero' e' ragionevole presumere esistano. Immagino che Ingtar, partecipando all’incontro con Ba’lzamon all’inizio del secondo libro, avra’ probabilmente prestato giuramenti piuttosto impegnativi, cui e’ comunque riuscito a rinunciare.
In compenso, a pag. 92 si tratta in modo esplicito della possibile rinuncia da parte dei non incalanatori ai voti oscuri, sia pur con riferimento all'epoca leggendaria, e come eventualita' remota. "Though it was known that Friends of the Dark could repudiate their oaths, as "no one can walk in the shadow so long that they cannot walk in the light", very few sought redemption."
Come ha gia’ notato anche Aegis, la timeline suggerita da Encyclopedia WOT non sembra reggere.
In particolare, prima di incontrare Verin in TGS Mat ha una visione di Rand con moncherino, e dice che il moncherino e’ presente da “a few weeks” (minimo venti giorni, ma ragionevolmente di piu’, dal momento che “a few” si usa quando “a couple” non e’ appropriato per difetto).
Visto che Mat resta poi per trenta giorni a Caemlyin prima che inizi l’attacco alla citta’, 50 giorni e’ il periodo minimo (ma veramente minimo) secondo questa cronologia dall’attacco di Semi nell’XI alla rivelazione di Rand in Veins of Gold (che e’ quasi immediatamente successiva all’attacco Seanchan alla Torre Bianca). Ricordiamo che la sera stessa dell’attacco Seanchan Verin avrebbe potuto avvertire Egwene di quanto stava per accadere in Andor.
50 giorni di tempo e’ un periodo inconsistente per eccesso, sia con la timeline di Tuon, che con la timeline di Rand, che con quella di Mat, che nel capitolo VIII di TOM vede gli effetti di Rand su Montedrago mentre e’ ancora a Caemlyn e non ha incontrato Elayne. L’incontro tra Verin ed Egwene dovrebbe avvenire almeno dieci giorni prima dell’attacco a Caemlyn.
Come accennavo prima, Brandon ha ammesso che c’e’ un problema con la cronologia di Mat in TGS, e nelle prossime edizioni verranno probabilmente corretti tali errori. Cito Terez di theoryland che parla con Brandon il 17 aprile 2011:
Terez: (herid) How much time passed between Verin's meeting with Mat and her death?
Brandon: Oh boy, you’re fishing for Nakomi!
Terez: No, actually I’m not; somebody else submitted that question.
Brandon: Okay. I would have to have the timeline in front of me.
Terez: Yeah. I think they asked because there are certain contradictions in the timeline and that’s why…
Brandon: Oh yeah. There’s a mistake in Mat’s timeline.
Terez: And that was in TGS, right?
Brandon: No, there’s a mistake in TOM. Mat sees sunshine when he shouldn’t, or vice-versa. The reason for that being, Mat’s timeline was the big one we were playing with, and we were moving him through the book to different places to decide where various things were appropriate, and where we settled on, both Alan and Bob Kluttz – who are really detailed timeline people – both stamped this timeline and said ‘There are no flaws in this except there is an error in TGS’, which we have now changed. But we let a typo creep through – that one was more of a typo because we moved a scene from some place to some place else – and so there is a cloud typo. It is recorded on Twitter – I don’t know if you saw it – where someone pointed it out to me and I said ‘We will get that changed.’ Maria now is aware of it.
Un quesito per tutti voi: invece di discutere semplicamente se la lettera di Verin fosse un buon espediente o meno, ed a parte vuotare il sacco con Tomas, potete immaginare metodi alternativi per rivelare l’attacco imminente a Caemlyn da parte di Verin
