- ...Now Melkor began the delving and building of a vast fortress, deep under Earth, beneath dark mountains where the beams of Illuin were cold and dim. That stronghold was named Utumno...[Melkor]
- ...And the shape of Arda and the symmetry of its waters and its lands was marred in that time, so that the first designs of the Valar were never after restored...
- ...green things fell sick, and rotted, and rivers were choked with weeds and slime...[Saruman e gli Ent]
-...Why hast thou done this? Why doth thou attempt a thing which thou knowest is beyond
thy power and authority?... did not desire such lordship. I desired things other than I am to love and to teach them...and in my impatience, I have fallen into folly...[Aule, parlando della creazione dei Nani]
Dio premia il pentimento
-Aule took up a great hammer to smite the Dwarves, and he wept. But Iluvatar had compassion upon Aule and his desire, because of his humility..[Di Aule e Yavanna]
-Manwe was free from evil and could not comprehend it, and he knew that in the beginning, in the thought of Iluvatar, Melkor had been even as he; and he saw not to the depths of Melkor's heart, and did not perceive that all love had departed from him for ever.[Su Melkor]
-In that hour was made a Darkness that seemed not lack but a thing with being of its own [L'Oscuramento di Valinor]
-(Melkor rivolto a Feanor)Here is a strong place, and well guarded; but think not that the Salmarils will lie safe in any treasury within the realm of the Valar!
But his cunning overreached his aim; his words touched too deep, and awoke a fire more fierce: than he designed...[Feanor]...cursed Melkor and bade him be gone...Melkor departed in shame..."[i Silmaril]
-(Dopo l'arrivo di un messaggero a Feanor, mandato da Manwe)Against thy folly of Feanor shall be set my counsel only. Go not forth! For the hour is evil, and your road leads to sorrow that ye do not forsee. No aid will the Valor lend you in this quest; but neither will they hinder you; for this shall ye know; as ye came forth freely, freely shall ye depart...the lies of Melkor thou shalt learn in bitterness..
-...But Feanor laughed...through sorrow to find joy; or freedom, at the least.
-(la causa del Kinslayer)Tears unnumbered ye shall shed...On the house of Feanor the wrath of the Valar shall lie...(inoltre, questo brano cita Milton, che in Paradise Lost lascia nella stessa situazione Adamo e Eva, nella lotta contro Satana, nonostante essi fossero stati avvisati)
Dal Diario del Maestro: Friendship with Lewis compensates for much, and besides giving constant pleasure and comfort has done me much good form the contact with a man at once honest, brave, intellectual--a scholar, a poet, and a philosopher--and a lover, at least after a long pilgrimage, of Our Lord
Stauron, Sommo Pontefice.

Dice Giuseppe Gorlani(grafico, saggista e poeta)
